Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) charging infrastructure

From "Introduction - Ideas and Objectives consultation"

Go to the project

BEV's whilst locally are zero emission there are issues. A BEV is 200kg-500kg heavier than it's equivalent internal combustion engine vehicle (ICE). Multistory car parks will need to be redesigned and existing ones upgraded.

I’m very concerned about the current safety of Lithium-ion battery technology. Battery bicycles are now the biggest domestic fire risk, in London.

The fire on the Freemantle Highway car freighter has highlighted the issue. Just as well such a fire hasn’t yet occurred on an overnight passenger/car ferry.

An obvious solution to improve this is would be to encase lithium-ion batteries with metal powder fire extinguishing media as this would fuse and plug any air ingress pathway. The drawback would be that this would further increase BEV weight and cost. Is there an industry working group looking at lithium battery safety improvements?
