About Fly Tipping

As part of the Rural Crime Partnership project South Oxfordshire, West Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse District Councils have seen an investment in fly tipping detection equipment, helping to catch fly tippers in the action and deter fly tipping.

If you find illegally dumped waste do not touch it - it could include hazardous waste and there could be evidence the council and police can use to catch and prosecute those responsible. Report the incident to the local council using the links to their websites at the bottom of this page.

What to Report

Don't worry if you don't have answers to all these questions, you can still make a report, but the more information you are able to provide the better.

  • Location of the rubbish.
  • What has been dumped - Do not touch the rubbish to find out, or go onto private property - just a general description of what you can see is enough.
  • Date and time you spotted it.
  • If you saw the person(s) carrying out the fly-tipping a description of the person/s and their vehicle will be helpful.
  • any other information you feel might be helpful for the council’s investigation - including any photographs.

What is the difference between Fly Tipping and Littering?

Fly-tipping is not the same as littering. Broadly speaking littering includes materials often associated with smoking, eating and drinking - including cigarette butts, food packaging, drinks bottles, cans and fast food wrappers or containers.

What Counts as Fly Tipping?

Fly-tipping is the illegal disposal of household, industrial, commercial or other ‘controlled’ waste - it includes liquids as well as solid items.

Leaving items in the following places all counts as fly-tipping:

  • on grass verges or along footpaths
  • along roadsides or in lay-bys
  • beside street bins and recycling banks
  • on the floor of communal bin areas
  • outside closed recycling centres and charity shops

Did You Know?

If your waste is fly-tipped, by you or by someone else on your behalf (even if they told you they were disposing of it legally) you could face a £400 fixed penalty notice. This can be increased to an unlimited fine if convicted in Crown Court.
