Kay Jerred•3 years ago When this development was suggested a few years ago, there was quite a lot of opposition; not to homes being built, but to the siting. I do agree with another comment about engaging with a wider range of residents; targeting information to the elderly, many of whom don’t use computers; leaflets in the major supermarkets; leaflets in medical centres and colleges. Many people I’ve spoken to didn’t even know this was happening and yet it’s soon to be presented to the Council. It’s not NIMBYISM to live in a flood risk area and have real concerns about the water losing land area to soak into, resulting in more coming down into the river Windrush. Residents in Witney have been told before about plans to retain some water with flood mitigation measures,(Kingfisher development!) but we need far more reassurances and guarantees that enough of these would be built in the FIRST phase of construction and would work well. (enclosed photo of flooding on walking/cycling path from Woodford Mill to North Witney!)It will also increase the issues with sewage as even though the sewage works are being extended locally, we were told they still wouldn’t be large enough to cope with even more development. A much cleaner river Windrush through Witney, could be a real boost for residents and visitors alike. I know areas of focus were tackling the climate and ecological emergency; an enhanced natural environment and healthy, safe and strong communities. In the last 3 years, the river upstream of the Bridge is a horrible colour and where fish were regularly seen, with butterflies, dragonflies always about and even kingfishers spotted, the river appears dead. The pleasure for Witney residents of sitting out by the river and watching nature has all but gone, which isn’t great for mental health. It certainly is no longer a well-oxygenated river. The idea of only having walk ways and designated cycling paths from a new development is rather naive, as many extra cars would still be driven into Witney for shopping, work and leisure, affecting the air quality in an area already notorious for high levels of pollution. Please don’t rush through these decisions without real consideration for residents and looking at other options that won’t have such an effect on people and the environment.
